Searching for Dracula: Myth, Monster or National Hero?

This program explores Vlad (Tepes), the Impaler/ Dracula’s, ageless historical figure and legacy. In addition to tracing Dracula’s footsteps at archeological sites, museums, and churches in Bucharest, we also visit Vlad the Impaler’s birthplace in Sighisoara and the Bran Castle in the Carpathian Mountains. Alongside Dracula, we will encounter vampires, ogres, ghosts, and creatures from another imaginary realm haunting the world of the living. Throughout the program, we will learn about the customs and experience cultural interactions within the national and linguistic borders of the still mysterious Romania and vampire haunted Transylvania. Beyond examining the historical Dracula, this program also offers an overview of the communist era (1945-1989), migration and ethnic tensions in today’s EU and beyond.

2024 Recap

Day 1

Our Searching for Dracula journey kicked off with a warm welcome in Bucharest, where we gathered for an unforgettable first group dinner, savoring the rich flavors of Romanian cuisine.The following morning, Bucharest impressed us with its architectural beauty, stunning museums like the National Museum of Art and the Romanian Atheneum, a temple of beauty and music.
 

Day 2

Our journey through Romania continues as we uncovered one of the most iconic landmarks in Romania, the Palace of Parliament in Bucharest.Our guided tour took us through the opulent halls and chambers, each more breathtaking than the last, giving us a glimpse into the country’s past and its complex political landscape.

Day 3

Our exploration of Bucharest's rich history took us on a fascinating journey on our third day. We started our day at the Kretzulescu Church, an architectural beauty standing as a testament to Romania's deep spiritual roots.Next, we stepped into the past at The Sutu Palace and then wandered through the charming streets of the Old Town, where we visited the ancient Stavropoulos Church and St. Anton’s Church. Our journey continued to the enchanting Manuc Inn, the oldest operating restaurant that used to be an inn in Bucharest and we ended our tour at the Aman Museum, home to the works of Theodor Aman, one of Romania’s most celebrated painters. 

Day 4

Today, we embarked on a spiritual and historical walking tour, exploring some of Bucharest’s most revered monasteries.Our journey began at the majestic Patriarchy Palace & Church, the heart of Romanian Orthodoxy. As we walked through its ancient halls and admired the stunning iconography, we felt a deep connection to the traditions that have shaped this nation’s identity. Next, we visited the serene Mihai Vodă Monastery, a hidden gem nestled within the bustling city. 

Day 5

Our Romanian adventure took an exciting turn as we departed Bucharest and journeyed through the stunning Carpathian Mountains to the historic city of Brașov. Upon arrival, we were greeted by the charming medieval ambiance that Brașov is famous for.Our first stop was the legendary Bran Castle. As we toured its mysterious halls and learned about its fascinating history, we were transported back in time, imagining the vampire tales and legends that have made this castle world-famous. We continued with a visit to the iconic Black Church, a stunning example of Gothic architecture and one of Brașov’s most famous landmarks. 

Day 6

On Day 6, our journey through Romania brought us to the picturesque town of Sinaia. Nestled in the stunning Carpathian Mountains, this charming town is home to one of Romania’s most magnificent landmarks the Peleș Castle.Our guided tour took us through the opulent rooms filled with exquisite woodwork, stained glass windows, and a remarkable collection of art and artifacts. Each room told a story of royal life, and we couldn’t help but imagine the grand events and intimate moments that took place within these walls.

Day 7

Today was a day of travel and discovery as we departed from the medieval charm of Brașov and made our way to the vibrant city of Cluj-Napoca, with some incredible stops along the way! Our first stop was the enchanting town of Sighișoara, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the birthplace of Vlad the Impaler, the inspiration behind the Dracula legend. Later in the day, we arrived in Cluj-Napoca, a city known for its rich history, vibrant culture, and youthful energy. 

Day 8

On Day 8, our exploration of Cluj-Napoca began with our knowledgeable faculty leading the way, we set off on a walking tour that took us through the heart of Cluj, uncovering its hidden gems and iconic landmarks.

Day 9

On Day 9, we were greeted by the welcoming atmosphere of Sibiu, known for its well-preserved medieval architecture and vibrant cultural scene.We participated walking tour of Sibiu and strolled through the cobblestone streets, we admired the colorful houses, picturesque squares, and historic landmarks that make Sibiu one of Romania’s most enchanting cities. 

Day 10

Our journey through the cultural heart of Romania took a fascinating turn today as we visited one of Sibiu’s most prestigious landmarks, the Brukenthal Museum. The Brukenthal Museum, one of the oldest and most significant art museums in Romania, welcomed us with its stunning collection of European masterpieces, Romanian art, and historical artifacts. 

Day 11

Our route took us through the picturesque landscapes of Transylvania, with a special stop at the historic Cozia Monastery. Nestled along the Olt River, this stunning 14th-century monastery offered us a moment of peace and reflection. The rich history and serene beauty of Cozia left us in awe, reminding us of the deep spiritual heritage that permeates Romania. After exploring the monastery, we continued our journey back to Bucharest. 

Day 12

As our incredible journey through Romania draws to a close, today was a day to relax, reflect, and savor the last moments in this beautiful country. We had our Farewell Dinner at Hanul Berarilor where we shared our last evening together, filled with laughter, shared memories, and a deep sense of gratitude for the experiences we've had in the beautiful country of Romania.
